Building Better Behavior, One Level at a Time
Canine Obedience and Training Classes
Our group canine obedience and training classes prepare you and your dog for the AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC) test. Kati Thom will administer all AKC tests at Sheyenne River Kennels.
We have a unique and effective approach to dog training classes, keeping our class sizes small and only training one dog/client at a time. Each dog/client gets 2-3 training sessions per day of class. While a dog/client is working with the trainer, the rest of the class observes and asks questions if they come up. This set-up is included in our Level 1 Obedience.

Scent work dog training class is a structured program where dogs and their handlers learn the fundamentals of scent detection and search skills. These classes are perfect for beginners interested in introducing their dogs to scent work, as well as for those aiming to compete in scent work sports or develop practical skills.
What to Expect in a Scent Work Class
1. Introduction to Scent Detection:
- Dogs are introduced to specific scents, often essential oils like birch, anise, or clove.
- Handlers learn how to pair scents with rewards (treats or toys) to motivate their dogs.
2. Search Techniques:
- Training starts with simple container searches (e.g., boxes or cups).
- Progression to more challenging scenarios, such as room searches, outdoor searches, and vehicle searches.
3. Marker and Reward Training:
- Dogs are taught to indicate when they find a scent, often through sitting, pawing, or staring.
- Handlers learn timing and reinforcement techniques to encourage accurate scent detection.
4. Confidence Building:
- Dogs develop problem-solving skills and confidence by tackling progressively challenging searches.
- Shy or anxious dogs often thrive in scent work, as it is low-pressure and fun!
5. Handler Skills:
- Handlers learn to read their dog’s body language and cues during searches.
- Classes teach proper leash handling and strategies for managing search patterns.
Who Can Join?
- Dogs of all breeds, sizes, and ages.
- Puppies can begin learning basic scent games.
- Older or less physically active dogs can participate since scent work doesn’t require strenuous activity.
